Federal authorities on Tuesday released newly obtained surveillance images and video showing a masked, armed individual outside the Tucson, Arizona, home of Nancy Guthrie, marking the most significant development yet in the investigation into her alleged kidnapping.
The images include several still photographs and two video clips that appear to show an individual wearing a ski mask, gloves, a zipped jacket, and a backpack standing outside the front door of the 84-year-old woman’s residence, The New York Post reported.
The footage also shows the person carrying what appears to be a firearm as they approach the home.
In a social media post, FBI Director Kash Patel shared several of the images publicly for the first time as investigators renewed their call for information.
A former FBI agent told The Post that the manner in which the individual carried the weapon, along with what appeared to be a clumsy attempt to obstruct a Nest security camera, suggested the suspect may be inexperienced.
The release of the images comes more than a week after Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her home during the early morning hours of Feb. 1.
Before Tuesday, investigators had not publicly identified any suspects, and law enforcement had not provided significant details about a possible abductor.
Authorities have said Nancy Guthrie was dropped off at her home by her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, following a dinner with her daughter, Annie, the night before she vanished.
On Monday, a deadline to pay a $6 million ransom in bitcoin passed without any confirmation that payment had been made or that Guthrie’s whereabouts had been discovered.
Hours before the deadline expired, Savannah Guthrie released another emotional video appeal on Instagram.
“We are at an hour of desperation,” she said in the video.

Patel again urged anyone with information related to the case to contact the FBI by calling 1 800 CALL FBI or submitting tips through tips.fbi.gov.
Authorities confirmed Tuesday night that a man detained earlier in the day in connection with the search for Nancy Guthrie’s alleged kidnapper was released without charges, according to ABC15.
The man, identified only as Carlos, told the outlet he and his wife were driving when they noticed police following them.
Carlos stated that officers initiated a traffic stop, following which they took him in for questioning.
“I told them, I work in Tucson for GLS, I might have delivered a package to her house but I never kidnapped anybody,” he said.
New: This is Carlos, who was detained in Rio Rico, Ariz., for questioning in the Nancy Guthrie abduction and has since been released.

Carlos added that he was detained for several hours.
Separately, a woman whose home in Rio Rico was searched by investigators told ABC15 that her son-in-law had also been detained during a traffic stop on Tuesday.
